Why Wood Changes Everything -E

When I tell non-climbers that I train on a wooden hangboard, they usually nod politely and change the subject. When I tell climbers, they lean in. They ask which one. They ask about edge depth, about texture, about mounting hardware. They want numbers. They want comparisons. They want to know if it is harder or easier than plastic.

But those are the wrong questions.

The difference between wood and plastic is not measurable in millimeters or degrees of friction. It is measurable in feeling, in psychology, in the long-term health of your fingers and your mind. I learned this slowly, over months of hanging on my Two Stones board, and I am still learning it now.

Plastic hangboards are designed for maximum friction. The surface is rough, almost gritty. When you pull on a plastic edge, your skin locks in place. You can relax your grip slightly and still stay on. That sounds like an advantage, and in the short term, it is. You can hang more weight, longer sets, more often. But that friction comes at a cost.

Your skin pays the cost. Your pulleys pay the cost. Because plastic does not slip, you never learn to engage your fingers precisely. You can crank down with passive tension, relying on the texture to hold you in place. That works until it does not. And when it does not, the failure is sudden and often painful.

Wood is different. A well-finished wooden edge has moderate friction. Enough to feel secure, not enough to cheat. If your form is sloppy, if your shoulders are shrugged, if your fingers are not actively engaged, the wood will tell you. Not by dropping you suddenly, but by letting you feel the slip coming. You have time to adjust. You have time to correct. You have time to learn.

That learning is the entire point.

The Two Stones hangboard is made from walnut, a hardwood with a tight, consistent grain. It is sanded smooth but not polished. There is no varnish, no coating that would change the feel. It is just wood, shaped into edges and slopes and pockets. When you touch it, you are touching the tree that grew it. That connection matters more than any number.

I train on wood because I climb on rock. Real rock is not uniformly rough like plastic. It varies. Some holds are sharp, some are smooth, some are polished by years of traffic. To climb well outside, you need to feel those differences. You need to adjust your grip pressure from moment to moment. You need to listen to what the rock is telling you.

Wood teaches that skill better than plastic ever could. Every session on the Two Stones hangboard is a session in sensitivity. I practice open-hand grips, half-crimps, three-finger drags. I pay attention to how my skin feels against the grain. I notice when I am squeezing too hard, when I am relaxing too much, when my breathing changes.

Plastic training made me strong. Wood training made me smart.

There is another difference, less practical but just as real. Wood is beautiful. Plastic is ugly. That sounds shallow, but I do not think it is. The objects we spend time with affect our mood, our motivation, our consistency. A black plastic board mounted above a doorframe looks like a threat. A warm wooden board looks like an invitation.

I have trained on both. With plastic, I found excuses to skip sessions. With wood, I find reasons to show up. I like touching it. I like looking at it. I like knowing that it was made by people who care about climbing, not by a factory that cares about profit margins.

That is not sentimentality. That is sustainability. The best training tool is the one you actually use. And I use my Two Stones hangboard almost every day.

So when climbers ask me if wood is better than plastic, I tell them yes. But not for the reasons they expect. It is not about edge depth or friction coefficients. It is about feeling, about longevity, about the quiet pleasure of touching something real.

Train on wood long enough, and you will understand. Your fingers will feel healthier. Your mind will feel quieter. And one day, you will touch a piece of rock and realise that you already know exactly how to hold it.
